Vivekananda House in South Pasadena

Swami Vivekananda stayed in this house for six weeks in 1900.
On the left is the Vivekananda House as it is today. On the right is
Swami Vivekananda standing in front of the house in 1900.

During his stay in Pasadena, Swami Vivekananda would picnic
in the hills behind the Vivekananda House.

The Vivekananda House was built before 1877 and is typically
Victorian with its gabled roof and distinctive sunburst designs.

In 1900 the house was owned by the Mead sisters who invited
Swami Vivekananda to stay with them. At that time, the two-
bedroom house was occupied by the three sisters, their father,
two children and a housekeeper.

Coming in the front door, the stairway leads
up to the room where Swami Vivekananda
stayed.

At the top of the stairs, we see his bedroom
straight ahead. It is now a sanctuary for
meditation. The second bedroom is off to the
left.

Coming back down the stairs, we look into the parlor. The house
has been restored to its original decor wherever possible.

Swami Vivekananda often sat and talked in
the parlor.

He dined at this table.

He cooked in this kitchen.

Swami Vivekananda would often stroll here in the garden and
play with the children.

While he was in Pasadena, Swami Vivekananda lectured at the
Green Hotel. On January 15, 1900 he gave a lecture here entitled
"Bhakti Yoga, the Religion of Love".
